SUICIDE OF A SAILOR

THE LATE CHIEF OFFICER OF THE CORINTHIC. LONDON, February 21. Mr Cooper, late chief officer of til© White Star liner Corinthic, .who wa9 summoned Home from Wellington to givo evidence at tho inquiry into tlie accidental death of tlie boatswain on tho voyago to New Zealand, committed suicide on board tlie Gothic on Monday. Ho had lately been suffering from depression. The boatswain of the Corinthie, W.Hardvick, was killed whilst unshipping a derrick at Hobart on 2nd January. Mr A. Cooper, the chief officer, arrived at Wellington by the Corinthie on 7th January, and left by tho Gothic on tho following day. Mr Cooper’s health broke down during the latter part of tho outward journey. _ After the Corinth lets arrival in Wellington a lumper was killed while coaling the ship, and one or two minor accidents occurred on board.
