THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT

The Northern Bowling Association nneiied its tournament in fine, but breezy weather on Monday. An imposing collection of bowlers assembled on th e Wellington green at 8.45 a.m., when the tournament was declared open by Mr D. J. Nathan, vice-president of the Northern Bowling Association. It " S aid Mr Nathan, his proud privilege to welcome them and to express the hope that they would have a most pleasant time, interesting games, and a full ueek of thorough enjoyment—that this week would always live in their’memories as one of the most perfect they ever spent He was sure that everything possible would be done to make their stay here enjoyable. Of Mr Mcntinlav the lion secretary of the associa- I fion’ they had already experience, and the amount of work and energy he would cut into the arrangements would be an excellent guarantee of the tournament being carried out in a satisfactory nianiit/r. (Hear, hear.) Mr Nathan went on to apologise for the absence of the president of the association, Mr G. Matthewson, of Gisborne, who was prevented from attending by urgent public business, and lie also regretted that it had been found impossible to arrange for the match North Island v. South Island, owing to the South Island haying been unable to provide the requisite number of teams. They were led to bclievo that one had to go down South to see bowls played properly, and they would have liked to have the South Island men on the Wellington greens to see whether that was so or not.
