FIRES.

TRAMWAY PLANT DESTROYED. DUNEDIN, February 14. A disastrous fire broke out in the * Tramway Company's shed in Cumberland street at an early hour this morning, resulting in the shed being practically gutted and the destruction of a dozen cars. ■) The night watchman at the stables on the opposite side of the street visited the shed five minutes after midnight, and saw that everything was quite safe. At 2.15, hearing a noise, he looked in the direction of the doer and saw a glare of fire under it, and on going out he found that the flames had 1 a strongs hold. The fire started about the cars which were running yesterday, and it is inconceivable how" it spread from cue car to another in such a short space of time. Portions of the shed near two fire-places were scarcely touched by the fire, and the carpenter’s shop suffered little damage. Mr Eglinton, who has charge of th© cars, went through the shed at some risk and found that nearly every oar which had been running yesterday had been reduced to a mass of iron. Four cars that were run out were considerably damaged. The destruction ot so much stock will for a time seriously inconvenience the city traffic. This is the second time that the city tramway’s have suffered loss from fire. The Royal and London and 1 Lancashire offices each hold a risk of £2250 on the oars, and the Imperial one of £I3OO on the building.
