SWIMMING.

WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB'S SPORTSThe annual swimming sports for members of the Wellington Rowing Club were held on Saturday afternoon. The weather was favourable, and there was a large attendance, including a number of ladies, for whom afternoon tea was provided. The principal event was the Club Championship, from the Queen’s Wharf to the shed skids—about 4t4oyds—which resulted in an exciting finish, the judges giving it a dead-heat between A. Me Alpine and J. Spencer. McAlpine won. the race on the two previous occasions that he competed for it, and holds the record for the distance, 6min 25sec.' The officials who conducted the meeting were: —Judges, Messrs R. F. Smith and J. W. Price; starters, Messrs A. J. Bishop and T. Spencer; handicappers. Messrs T. Spencer, W. Nidd_ and G. A. AlcAlpine was the only competitor to successfully walk the greasy boom. The best- of the others were E. Hutchen (placed second), and S. Gyles and H. Jones, who were considered equal for third place.

SPORTS AT THE THORNDON BATHS. The Ladies’ Pipitea Amateur Swimming Club held a carnival at the. Thorndon Baths oil Saturday afternoon. The attendance of spectators was large, but the weather was not the most favourable for this class of sport, there being a strong north-westerly gale, and, consequently, somewhat rough water. For that reason the competition for the various events was not so keen as it; would have been under more genial conditions, but, nevertheless, was sufficiently so to invest each event with iixterest. Minifie’s String Band contributed selections of music, and, welcome afternoon tea was dispensed by the committee. An interesting addition to the programme was a diving and swimming exhibition by a number of members of the Thorndon (male) Club, in which Messrs G. S. Hill, J.-Berti, Tom Gray, E. J. Styles, T. Hamer, E. P. Richardson and others took part. Mrs J. Bertie acted as secretary and handicapper; Mr E. J. Fleming, starter Mi* G. S. Hill, check starter; Mrs C. C. N. Barron, Mrs W.
