ROBBERY UNDER ARMS
Inspector Gillies, of Wanganui, telegraphed to the Commissioner of Police at Wellington on the 6th instant that an attempted case of "sticking up” nad occurred at Patea. At five o’clock on Tuesday evening a clerk named Hickson, employed in the Bank of New South Wales, Avas returning to Patea from Waverley, carrying AA'ith him a money-bag, when a young man emerged from the cemetery and fired two shots at him with a reA r olver, one shot passing through thej collar of his coat, and the other missing altogether. Constable O’Brien Avitnessed the occurrence from a distance of 200 yards, and gave chase to the Avould-be murderer, who bolted across country. A hue and c ry. Avas raised, and Constable O’Brien arrested the offender in a raupo swamp at six o’clock the same evening. He gives the name of James Burn. Hickson is not injured. A constable has been sent from Wanganui to assist in the search for the offender’s r©A r olver, etc., whiehi were either lost or hidden when crossing country.
