At an ordinary meeting of the City Council last AA'eek there AA'ere present —The Mayor (Mr J. G. W. Ait ken), Councillors Barber, Evans, Smith, J. P. Luke, Izard, Townsend, Murdoch, Anderson, McGill, Willeston, Minder, To.hurst. OHIRO ROAD. It aa’us decided to refer to the Streets Works Committee a petition from ratepayers in Ohiro road and Maraama crescent for the repair of the roads there. ABATTOIRS. The Abattoirs Committee reported that it had considered the question of erecting abattoirs. It Avas quite clear, the report stated, that the Act requires that an abattoir shall be established and maintained by the Corporation within one year from Ist April, 1901, and the committee therefore recommended that the necessary steps be taken for such an establishment as soon as possible. The committee further recommended the Council to consider whether it Avould be advisable to amalgamate Avith other local bodies, as provided by the Act. Councillor Evans moved that the report be referred back to the committee, to see whether adjacent local bodies Avould join, and to report to cost, site and the number or butchers who AA r ould be likely to take adA*antage of the premises.—Carried. WORKS REPORT. The w orks Committee’s report as follows Avas adopted : —(1) That the Public Works Department be-informed that the Council regrets that it is unable to bear half the cost of flagging the pavement in front of the Government Printing Office, the Government Buildings and the Police Station, (2) That the proprietors of the Turkish baths, Manners street, be allowed to erect a portico at tfieir premises, as per plan submitted, pro Added it is erected to the satisfaction of the City Engineer, and an undertaking given to remove or alter same whenever called upon t° do so. FIRE BRIGADE. The committee’s report as folloAvs was adopted:—(l) That the Government he asked to alloAV its expert officer to classify the different kinds of dangerous goods kept by chemists, _ photographers and others, with the Anew of making some necessary alterations in the bjTlaw Avith respect to storage of same. U) That the request of a late member of the brigade for an inquiry into the circumstances respecting his dismissal from the brigade be not complied with. GENERAL. Councillor TolhursL’s motion that the resolution previously passed calling upon Mr W. McGill to furnish a light for the extension of Walter street and provide cost of lighting same, be rescinded, was Ifigt- A further motion that the compensation to be paid for the lamp be £SO was also lost. It was ultimately resolved that an amount be paid by Mr McGill which at 4£- per cent, would return £3 10s per annum. A petition for the repair of Perceval street was referred to the Engineer to report upon. The question of Corporation lease renewals was referred back to the committee, Avith poAver to get revaluations as the leases fell in. Accounts to the amount of £lß3l 14s lid were passed for payment. The receipts for the month amounted to £14,299 7s 6d, and the expenditure to £7346 17s 3d.
