LATE BOWLING

033 A MP3 ON SHIP TOURNAMENT. THE FIRST DAY’S PLAY. CHRiiSTCHURCrI, January 14. The this morning was anything 'but ideal for bowling. Heavy rain fell and it looked at one time as if the tournament would be seriously interferred with. Theysky cleared, however, about ten and half an hour later a start was made with, the rink _ tournament. For this there werfli thirty-seven entries', representing seventeen clubs. Five rinks entered from North Island clubs, Newtown sending two, Victoria, Palmerston North and Feilding one.each. Of the South Island clubs nearly' all the chief ones were represented. The most notable absentee was the Taieri Club, which ha* such a great record at association tournaments, and a rink from which nearly swept the board at the tournament held here two years ago. Both the Canterbury and Christchurch greens were in. capital order, though the rain made them somewhat dead. Three -rounds! of the Rink Tournament ■were get off to-day, and the- play in some instances was _ of a high order. There was a splendid game in the first round between Christchurch (Wood) and Oamaru ((Martin) the former rink just winning by a. point after a. game in which only 25 points were__ scored. Christchurch (Raphael) beat Phoenix (Waddell) by six, the winning skip astonishing his friends by the fine game he played. Christchurch (Larn'Me) proved too good for Invercargill yPorteous), five points separating them at the finish. Feilding (Eaywell). was overmatched _ by Eaitnna (Sneddon), the latter holding jin advantage- right through the game. Dunedin (Sinclair) and Invercargill (Taylor) had a- close game for the first half when the Dunedin rink went right away. Dunedin (McLaren) met Palmerston North (Mowlem), the former losing by a couple of points after a keen game. The Dunedin skip unfortunately turned his own winning bowl out with his last shot. Christchurch (Raphael)) had another easy win over -Tirnaru (Dr Reid). Canterbury (Oakley) and Green Island (Harraway) played a? very close game, the former winning by three. Young (Otago) made a creditable first appearance as a tournament skip. .Caledonian (Yates) was de•xeated! by ChTistchunch (Jackson) after another close game, in which, unfortunately for the. Southern men, Morrison and Y ates, had to do all the work, Evans and Barlow Being quite out of form. Palmerston North (Mowlem) had a hard tussle with Christchurch (Manning), the latter win- ■ ning by a point. Canterbury (Gee) started badly with Invercargill (Erskine) but made good recovery and won rather easily. Caledonian (ETogg) always had good lead from Rosy?*) (Ma.theson). Caledonian (Wedderspoon) played a. good game and easily beat Newtown (Underwood). Ivaifuna (Paterson) started well against Canterbury (Meikleham), but went to- pieces when half the game had been played. Dune-din (Peake) easily beat Ashburton (Coleman). Rosy In. (Scott) and Lawrence (Anderson) had a very close game. The latter had got big lead at start, but Eoslyn won by a couple of points. Victoria (Brackenridge) never gave Dunedin (Sinclair) a chance, winning by fifteen. Ashburton (Craighead) played a good game with Canterbury (Hyndman) .but the latter proved too good in a close finish. Eaitnna (Sneddon) started the third round by beating Canterbury (Gee) rather easily at the finish, after being eight down y at the seventh head. Christchurch (Wood), gave Caledonian (Hogg) a very bad beating and Christchurch (Jackson) was much too good for Canterbury (Oakley). Eoslyn

(Scott) ran. away from Christchurch (Lamfoie). Caledonian (Wedderspoon) started badly with Christchurch (Manning), the latter scoring at seven, successive heads and finally winning by six. The fourth Christchurch rink (Raphael) made very short work of . Canterbury (Thompson). Newtown (Prince) created a very favourable impression in the game with Canterbury (Meikleham), winning by ten. Victoria (Braekenridge) and Canterbury (Hyndrnan) had a great tussle. The northern players wqii By a point on the-- last head. - The result cf to-day's play is to leave eight rinks in. Of these, four are Christchurch club rinks, Newtown, Eaitnna, Victoria and Eoslyn suppling the others. The play of Wccd’e_ rink was greatly admired, it consists of Barnett, Gibb, Bishop, ami Wood, of whom Barnett and Bishop were members of the winning rink two years ago. Sneddon's team also played well, the Eaitnna crack being in great form. Newtown was greatly fancied and on today’s form Raphael is also considered to have a big chance. , The bulk of opinion however, favours the chances of Wood’s rink. Seventy-two pairs entered to-night for the Double-handed Match which will start to-morrow. It has been decided to restrict the game to thirteen ends.
