OUR VOLUNTEERS
The Wellington Guards held the third competition for the Seely Cup on. Fnuay morning, but owing to heayy rain not many competitors turned up. The ranges were 600 and' VUG yards, seven shots per range, handicap. On'Saturday thesame company. held 1 the > first competition for class trophies- (second series) at Karori Range, the conditions being six matches, highest aggregate in the six. The ranges pn Saturday wefeJ-500 and 600yds, ten shots-per range for A Class, and seven shots: per range for B ..Class, handicap in. both classes. ■ Some very good scores wgre made. THE HERETAUNGA CAMP. The camp of the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles at Te Maranui was brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday afternoon. Colonel Porter inspected the troop wiiich, under command of Lieutenant Kinsey, went through a number of evolutions. Afterwards: an adjournment was made to Lyell Bay beach, where an interesting sports programme was gone through, with the following results: —Hurdle Race (for a watch and chain presented by Lieutenant Lloyd)—Private Perrett, 1; Sergeant Morris, 2; Sergeant-Major O’Brien, 3. Jumping in Sections (for Lieutenant Kinsey’s trophy), Sergeant Smith’s section, 1; Ser-geant-Major O’Brien’s section, 2. .lumping in file, steeplechase style (for Lieutenant Lloyd’s silver cup)—Sergeant-Major O’Brien, 1. Foot race, 220yds—Private Campbell, 1. Mile Flat Race— Corporal Bud, 1; Sergeant-Major O’Brien, 2. Alarm Race (dress, saddle up, gallop to a given point and fire five rounds) —Private Brake, 1. Captain Symes, of the Hawera. Mountted Rifles, officiated as judge. In the evening a concert was held and the prizes presented in the big tent at Te Maranui in the presence of a large number of people, including officers and men of several city corps.
The City Rifles held a competition at Karori for A and B Class trophies on Saturday afternoon. The ranges were 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each. Col.Sergeant Davis headed the list for A Class with tlie respectable score of 56 points, and Private Fease.v tlie B Class list with 42 points. With one or two exceptions the B Class competitors were making their initial attempt at trophy shooting, and the scoring, considering the tricky wind with which they had to contend, was satisfactory. The following are the scores: A Class. —Col.-Sergt. Davis, 56: Sergt. Halpiir*, 51; Private Jackson*, 50; Private Curry, 48; Private Harris, 44; Private Lawton, 29.
