It is estimated that a thousand shells have been thrown into the town within the last three days. , The population has been driven to taking up its residence wherever possible in underground retreats. The Mayor of Kimberley has sent a heliograph message to the British army at Modder river that the citizens of the „town would endure any privations- in defence or their honour.
