A Martyr for Liberty.
STORY RECALLED BY THE DEATH OF A CHELTENHAM SURGEON. The death occurred on August Bth of Mr Lauriston Winterbotham, M.R.C.S., for the last forty year's a leading Ohelten-: ham practitioner. ""' ' He"was in his sixty-sixth year, and belonged to a very old West England Liberal and Nonconformist family. His grandfather/ William Winterbotham, who was Baptist Minister at Plymouth, was, in July, 1793, indicted at Exeter Assizes for maliciously and seditiously attempting to disturb the peace of the kingdom by preaching'a sermon on the preceding stn November, advocating the extension of civil and religious liberty. "The trial created a great popular sensation, and ended with wnat was termed "the very moderate and merciful sentence" or four years' imprisonment and a fine of £2OO. This brave martyr in the cause of freedom was removed to Newgate gaol, where he worked out his iniauitous sentence. ■ln"a year or two afterwards Mr Winterbotham was appointed minister at Shortwobd ~abernacle, near Stroud. .
