FIVE YEARS' PROGRESS IN THE NORTH ISLAND.

From a table prepared by the RegistrarGeneral showing the progress in the North Island from 1891 to 1896 it appears that .the population has increased by 59,176 ; that the cultivated holdings increased by 5589, the areas of which have increased by 1,372,392 acres, the greater portion of which increase is represented by areas in sown grasses ; that the number of horses have increased by 27,865, of cattle by 181,460, of dairy cows (included in cattlei by 58.902, and of sheep by 1,971,809. The number of sawmills has increase! by 86, the hands employed thereat by 057, and the output of sawn timber by 20,070,39 i sup. feet. Tho total value of the output from sawmills increased by .£50,621. The number of dairy factories increased by 50. and the hands employed thereat by 193. The output of butter increased by 7,019,0011 b, and of cheese by 1374 tons. The total v&lua of all products increased from .£77,576 in 1891 to -8312,078, or by o£2G 1,502.
