Pheasants are reported to bo fairly plentiful in the Forty-mile Bush district, and they are well spread over the wholo of the district. It is said, however, that there U a groat, preponderance of hen biros. Quail a,re lV.iHv numerous in places, but, arc not. widespread. These birds are presumably the descendants of 52 braeo obtained from S' elson, and liberated by Messrs Gothard and Seymour, of Woodvillo, also 10 brace turned out by tire Hon J. D. Ormond on bis Woodvillo property several years ago. Ducks are plentiful when it is considered that there are no lakes or lagoons in this district, of a reasonable size, to shelter them. Hares are increasing, but are not yet plentiful. As yet very little attention has been paid to developing the sea fisheries of the colony, saj’s the. report of the Acclimatisation Society. This important industry is principally carried on by Italian and Greek immigrants, wno have tried to develop our resources in a plucky way, considering Ihe small amount of capital and imperfect appliances a-, their command. The foil wiug figures, comp led Irom oflicial returns abating some years back, show the relative valuo of the catches per inhabitant of the countries named : United States, *M ; Great Britain, 'IS; Japan, *l3; Russia, •05 ; Franco,’ll ; Canada, '7O; Norway, '8 : Newfoundland, G‘7u ; Portugal, 'lO ; Spain •03; Holland, 1 ; Sweden, H ; Italy, vOS Japan maybe regarded as one of the countries that has taken a load in fisheries, fish ot all kinds constituting one of the principal articles of diot. Its fisheries give employment to 1,651,178 men, the principal lish being the herping, cod and salmon.
