RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON B.C. MEETING.

FIEST DAY

President, Mr H. D. Bell : vice-presidents, Messrs E. Pearce and T. G. Macarthy; judge, Mr G. H. Scales ; lion, treasurer, Mr F. Franklyn ; timekeeper, Mr N. Grace ; ste-vards, Messrs James Ames, W. E. Bidwill, J. Maginnity, G. H. Harbroe, J. B. Uarcourt, C. P. Skerrett and J. Saunders; starter, Mr H. Piper ; lion, surgeon, Dr James R. Purdy ; clerk of the scales, Mr J. Tv'ilkins ; handicapper, Mr J. O. Evett ; clerk of the course, Mr G. McDonald; secretary, Mr H. M. Lyon. Visitors from all parts of the Colony assisted at the \y.K.C Spring Meeting at the Hutt on Saturday. Faces of prominent sportsmen from every centre were to be seen in tho lawn and paddock, some racing horses and others watching other people's horses run. The crowd was a large one, and the inner enclosure was better patronised then ever it had been previously. The entrance receipls must have been considerably above the average. There has never been a more successful gathering at the Hutt, and, although the dividends paid precluded the majority from returning home winners, the racing was a distinct sporting success. The meeting was well managed too, and everything passed off without complaint, thanks to the able engineering of Mr H. M. Lyon, secretary. The principal event, tho Exhibition Handicap, went to Auckland, Mr T. Morrin, the noted breeder, securing the Club's handsome three hundred pound valentine. It was an unfoi-tunate race, inasmuch as four horses fell at the road turn. Aoone, the ultimate winner's stable mate, swept round into third place, but toppled over, and his rider, Gallagher, who has been most unlucky in the matter of accidents, had his right arm broken, as well as a number oi' ribs, lie was attended to by Dr Purdy. Douglas and Errand Boy, ■who were just behind, also came down as well as Hangipuhi, who was the last to fall. The jockeys of these animals only got a bad shaking. It was said that the cause of the accident was some grass strewn over a patch of tan which had been laid down. The grass was strewn over the tan in order that the horses should not jump it, anl it is asserted that Acone slipped on this grass. Cur representative was not in. a position to ascer-

tain the correctness of this statement at the time, but the caretaker informed him that the accident occurred before the tan was reached. Arrailla led from end to end, and paid .£9 14s. Errand Boy, who wa3 second, ran very well for an alleged "hack," The Miser, who looked fit, third. Mahaki was the absolute favourite, but ran none too well, and St. Laura never appeared to be in it. Rangipuhi was second favourite, and Defiance and Strathbraan were next in public estimation. Mr Ormond's horses, however, did not shape a 9 well as anticipated. Earlier in 'the day Orion's Belt won the November mile event equally as easily. Castor's son had a very light weight, and when the favourite, Leda, came in the straight she had to be content with a place, top w sight Blarney just beatinsr her. There w..-re fourteen starters for the Maiden Hack Race, The Guardsman, by Cuirassier, being deemed the best. When the pinch came he could get no nearer than third to Whario and Steelshot. The winner paid a shilling short of twelve pounds. There was nothing in the hurdles but Kauri Gum after a mile aod a balf had been got over, and he won easily from Conscript, who is a fine jumper. Armilla's second leg in the double event oame off in the Shorts Handicap, in which there was a very close finish. Percy White came with a fast run at the grey gelding Flying Shot, who was leading, Sedgebrook. the Wanganui horse, who was a great "pot" also dashing up and just getting beaten. Flying Shot faded inside the distance. Mr Ormond's Dauntless was favourite, but ran disappointingly. There were five defections from tho First Hack Handicap, which fell to the top weight, Hillstone, who carried 9st 51b. The strangest part of it was that he led all the way, although there were nine behind him! Tu Kingi, a youngster by Flintlock, was favourite. Marina, prominent all the way, finished second. The Nelson horse Alpha was second favourite, but did not gallop in a good vein. A dividend of over <£l3 was paid by the winner. There was considerable speculation in the First Welter race. Golden Plover was a hot paddock tip, and, after taking command at the road turn, looked the best in the race. But ho swung -wide coming into the straight, jind Kingsinan, tile well-bred brother to Launceston and Florrie, raced up on the inside and won easily. "Mr Portland " entered a protect on the ground that Kingsman's running was not consistent with his racing in the November Handicap, the first event on the programme. After hearing evidence the stewards had the blue flag hoisted, which indicated that the protest had been dismissod. The last event was the Flying, for Avhich •Uic HonG. McLean's Mist, by St. ClanMistral, was the only non-starter. The public clung fondly to tho Hon Mr Ormond's representative for the third time during the day, Daredevil being the fancy on this occasion. The ceiise jacket was certainly orominent most of the journey, but it was never in front. Watchers of the race saw the grey Flying Shot in a very handy position, a few lengths behind King's Bowman, who led the other cena merry dance. Inthe straight the grey was let loose, and paid .£22, the dividend of the day. Torpina came very fast at tho close, and dead-heated King's Bowman lor second place. The Napier animal appeared on the scene all too late. He would have paid a nice dividend, there being only 25 on him out of .£1052. During the day <£7397 was passed through the machines, which were worked by Mr J. Ames. On the first day of the Spring Meeting last year, J 64703 went through, but it was a different class of meeting, and the stakes weren't so largo. Minifie'a band discoursed music on the lawn during the afternoon. The course was in fino galloping condition, and all the arrangements were perfect. At the hill Porepo shot out from the field and led round tie back, where Orion's Belt made a forward movement, and Douglas improved his position, going 10 the middle of the hold. At the turn Orion'c Belt drew out and took a three lengths lead. It was seen on entering the straight that tho field could not catch the Hawke's Bay horse. Leda and Blarney came up under the whip, but Orion's Belt won by a couple of lengths, Blarney just beating Leda for second place. Coin made most of the running. At the turn Whario went up, but fell away again. St. Laura was as usual fractious at the post. She had the inside running, and Mahaki was on the outside. A good start was secured by Mr Piper. In front of the stand Armilla had the lead from Strathbraan and Errand Boy, Douglas and Rangipuhi following, with St. Laura last. At the hill Armilla had a length's lead of Errand Boy. who had supplanted Strathbraan, Flaneur lying fourth. At the back Mahaki commenced to go up. St. Laura was now a very bad last, and was running unkindly. The next horse to her was Defiance, who was also apparently out of it, even thus early. Acone went up into forth place at the bads. Sweeping round the turn Armilla increased her lead, and was going very strongly, her jockey sitting as still as a statue. Errand Boy was still second, and apparently full of running. Beforo the straight was reached the race looked all over, Armilla increasing her load. Acone -now darted up, and when sweeping round the turn fell, Douglas, Flaneur and Rangipuhi coining with him. Gallagher was the only one to get hurt. Armilla came on full of runn : ng, and won very easily from Errand Boy, The Miser, who name fast at the finish, being a good third, Mahaki fourth, St. Laura fifth, Waiuku sixth, Strathbraan next, and Defiance following. Voltaire began to go up rounding the road, and the cardinal and cerise jackets were soon together. Flying > hot led into the straight, where Armilla started to como through with Sedgebrook. Dauntless looked like winning at the distance, but faded, and Armilla, coming with a hot run, caught Flying Shot.
