The Laurier Government, which took office in July last on the defeat of the Conservative Party at the general election in Canada, is vigorously pushing forward its pronounced policy of tariff reforms. Legislation has already been passed in Parliament abolishing all the duties imposed for purely Protective purposes. The announcement of the Spanish loan for home purposes has occasioned a patriotic outburst, and many ladies are selling their jewellery in order to provide funds to subscribe towards it.
