A HEALTHFUL RESORT.

The oft-repeated complaint from visitors to Wellington of the scarcity of pretty drives and spots of interest to be visited is gradually being met by the opening up of the suburban porton of this province. Although not so well known as boss’ Gardens at the Hutt or PJimmerton, perhaps as nice a drive as can be picked out is that to the Taita, about three miles from the Lower Hutt Station. At the Taita Mr F. McGovern, well known in Wellington and elsewhere in the Colony as the popular licensee cf various hotels, is to be found ready and willing to cater to the wants of all who visit his charmingly situated little hostelry, the Taita Hotel. The hotel is close to the main road, in the midst of well-kept and tastefully laid out gardens and walks, and the visitor may after the drive or ride from town get a well prepared meal, with every attention. The land connected with the hotel consists of some 50 acres, and runs from the road right back to the Hutt River. On this land just at the rear of the hotel is an historical burial ground of great chiefs killed in tribal wars of days long ago, and one of the conditions laid down to lessees of the property is that this burial ground must be kept securely fenced, so rhat no animals can wander on to it. Another interesting relic are the remains of a number of rifle pits dug during the troublous times of the Maori War. By the riverside opportunity is given for some capital sport in rabbit hunting. Owing to the steady increase in iiis business Mr McGovern finds it necessary to greatly enlarge his hotel, and tenders are now called for these extensions. The improvom-nts mean considerable additions to the bar and dining-room, the addition of four large bedrooms and the erection of a balcony. Mr McGovern, anticipates that tile improvements ■wiii make a big hole in .£7OO. His determination to meet the requirements of Visitors deserves recognition, and anyone who wants a pleasant outing- may be cordially recommoadad to visit the X&ita Hotel.
