Tlio other day tho J lasting.; Standard staled that tho local Bend) of Magistrates had accused tho Hastings correspondent of tho New Zealanp Times and Maii, of having made a deliberately slanderous and false attack on tho police in connection with a recent accident case. The Standard has now published an apology to our correspondent, explaining that its information had beoa received second-hand, and that the words complained of were not used by the bench. As a matter of fact, we understand that the attack undo on Mt*. oorrespond?nt was made by Smgeant Mitchell. Tho incident caused some talk in Hastings, and at their las' meeting the local Assembly of the Knights of Labour unanimously passed tho following resolution :—" That the attack made by Sergeant Mitchell on tho Hastings correspondent of tho New Zealand Teres was entirely unwarranted and unr-uppoil"d by fads, and was all the in no cont"iiipti.')le [liroiigli having b '.en nude in the absence of tiie uorrosp 'ii lout."
