VOLUNTEERS.
The AA r ellingtou Guards paraded at tho Drillslied last week under the three company officers to the number of over 50. After come practice of ceremonial and inarching work, the annual general meeting of the corps was held, Captain Paterson in the chair. The report and balance-sheet were presented and were approved. .From these it appeared that the position of the company was steadily improving. The capitation earned was higher than for years past, showing that the average attendance and proficiency had increased. The corps began last year with a comfortablo bank balance, and was beginning this year with one slightly bettor. Private Aarnodt was re-elected secretary, and a special committee, consisting of Sergeants Lacey and Love, Corporal Homer, Privates Hale, Alaeaskill and Kdinger, was appointed to take charge of tho arrangements for tho annual ball and other matters. During the evening marksmen were presented with the badges of their efficiency, and stars for long service wore also distributed. Corporal Thawloy received the rifle and three stars as highest in the last period of the annual class filing. Tho annual competition by the marksmen of the district for the gold and silver medals of the North Island and the AA'ellington district medal commenced on Monday afternoon, tho marksmen of the Wellington corps firing /at the Polhill Gully range under tho super- , vision of _ Lieutenant-Colonel Newall and Alajor Collins. The highest scorer was Private Jack Turner, of the City Rifles, with a score of SO ; Gunner Bulford, AA 7 ellington Navals, next with 77, and P.O. Fredericks, Wellington Navals, third with 70. Colonel Newall leaves by this morning’s train and will bo engagedall the week supervising tho competitions in other portions of his district. The result will not be known till tho end of June, as the time for firing has been extended till tho 30th Juno. Another opportunity will be given to qualified men of local corps absent yesterday.
