THE ALLEGED BLACKMAILING CASE.
At tho Magistrate's Court on Thursday morning Austin Kirby, detective, was charged before Air Greenfield, S.Af.—(l) That on the 31st January, 18S2, at Timaru, he did threaten to accuse John Ileiman of ail infamous offence, with tho view to extort, gain money and a gold watch from tho said John Herman; and (2) that on the 21st January, 187(5, at Timaru, with intent to defraud John Herman, by threatening to accuse him of an infamous offence, did induce tho said John Herman to sign two cheques for .£4OO and =£3oo. Air Gully and Inspector Pender appeared for the Crown, and Sir Robert Stout for the accused. Mr Jellicoc watched the proceedings on behalf of Herman. A remand till Friday, 29th, was asked for by Sir Robert Stout, who also asked for bail. Air Gully opposed the request for bail, and said he was prepared to offer evidence to show the nature of tho alleged offence. Air Greenfield granted the remand, and said that lie would grant bail in two sureties of £75 each on each charge. At the request of Air Gully the amount was raised to =£loo. Air A. lloby, dentist, and Ah’ T. R. Jones, contractor, entered into sureties for tho required sum.
