THE LABOUR WORLD.
Ninety London employers have conceded tho demands of the builders, and five thousand men have returned to work. The strike of engineers and boilermakers in Adelaide is practically settled through the medium of tho President of tho Conciliation Hoard. The employers have agreed to pay the wages asked by tho men, as they consider they are worth them, but they reserve the right of taking hack whom they like, and insist on the strikers applying individually. No strike pay has been distributed yet to the Newcastle miners, and it has been decided to allow the strike fund, which is very low, to bo considerably augmented before commencing payments. Considerable support is being received from other colliery districts and from tlm other colonies. A very successful social evening was held on Saturday night in the Forward Movement Hall, under the auspices of the New Zealand Workers’ Union. 'Tho mooting opened by a pianoforte selection by Mr J. Hague, followed by songs by Miss Harvey, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Moore, Messrs Ellison, Blanchfield, \V. Jones (secretary) and Brake, and a recitation was given by Mr McLaren. Mr \V. A. Evans read a humorous paper entitled “ Tho Elopement,” Mrs JI. B. Mason and Mr J. Hague played tho accompaniments, and Mrs Mason also contributed an overture.
The secretary of the Typographical Union states that the number of unemployed compositors who have sent in their names is 41. There aro several other unemployed who have not forwarded their names. ’J lie majority of the men who havo sent in their names have been unemployed for the past four or five months, and during that period the Typographical Union has paid .£'(10 in allowances for those out ol employment. Many of the men who are now coming to Wellington to obtain work are leaving casual employment in other parts of the Colony, thus depriving many of the local men Horn securing work which they consider they have a prior claim to.
