OVERCROWDED TRAMCARS.
The overcrowding of tho tram cars still continues, and there is still the same universal cry for reform in this direction, A glaring instance of the incapacity of the present system was witnessed on Thursday afternoon. A car going up Cuba street was crowded with passeug jrs, who were standing packed as closely as sardines on the front and t he bad: and in the interior of the car, besides which several people, including two ladies, found rest, for the. soles of their feet on the step, regardless of the risk they ran of being swept oil" by a passing vehicle. Where the car turned down into Vivian street no less than .yavo.i ladies were waiting for it, an 1 as the tw > ladies who were riding tm the step got oiT lucre, others took their j.dices, and desperately clu i ' as the car continued its journey tow,.in., Newtown. The four otlci would-!) ' pi.;sengors had perforce to remain behind, alt! i< i: tg ’ i the ,s( rails to which one of them at lea.Co was reduced was .-.liown by the remark she made to her companion— Well, I shall have to sit on the kerbstone', for I can never walk to Newtown.” When will it be realised in the proper quarters that the needs of the public have far outgrown tho present system r The present state of affairs is distinctly unsatisfactory. During the afternoon more especially the number of passengers, ladies particularly, is very considerable, and frequently gentlemen have to give up their seats. The other day one crusty old individual was heard to remark comfortably to a lady who was unable to find a seat in a car —• “You have the name privileges as us now, and you must lake the lat with the lean.” The tramway service might even be made more up to date il during the busy hours of the afternoon, say from 2 to .1, two cars should run, one behind the other. Ily this means overcrowding might be done away with, and the inconvenience o! the public modified. [Jut a radical change in the system is necessary.
