BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
The annual mooting of tho Wellington Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society was hold on Tuesday mu lit in tho Terrace Congregational Church, Major-Gene-ral Schaw presiding. The annual report, read by the Rev W. Shirer (secretary), stated that tho report of tho last annual meeting of the Society in London showed steady and successful work. The Scriptures had been more and more widely circulated throughout the world, and it was claimed that every known great language had the whole Bible translated into it, and the smaller languages were now receiving attention. Tho income was =£139,810, and from sales =£93,5T3. The expenditure amounted to .£2l 1,970, leaving a balance of =£15,392, through which a long-standing deficit had been removed and a surplus brought forward to next year’s account. The war between China and Japan had interfered with tho work in tlnse countries. For local work more collectors were required, and every congregation should endeavour to appoint one. The meetings of the collectors should bo more frequent, and an effort to increase the number of contributors should also be made. Tho local treasurer’s statement of accounts showed that the receipts amounted to =£sl 5s 9d, and after meeting expenditure there was a balance in hand of =C2O.
The reports were adopted, and Mr J. G. W. Aitken was elected president for the ensuing year, and Air Knowles treasurer, and the Rev W. Shirer was re-elected secretary. A strong and representative committee was also appointed. The meeting was addressed by several speakers. Tho Rev AY. J. Habons stated that the lack of interest taken in the work in Wellington was surprising, and he thought that the collections wero very small in proportion to the size of the city. After votes of thanks to the chairman and the collectors were passed, tho Veil Archdeacon Stock pronounced tho Benediction and the meeting closed.
