DEPARTMENTAL NEWS.
The following appropriations have been mado for public works :—Hawora Courthouse, .£018; Soaward Bush Railway, JEIBBO. Government have docidod to bring in next session an amendment ot tho Saamon's and Shipping Act, dealing with tho quostion of load lines and preventing unsoaworthy ships putting to sea.
The lowest tender for tho construction of the Makohino Viaduct was so much in oxcoss of the Government Engineer's estiinato that Cabinet have declined to accept any tendor. The question of making excavations for the foundations was referred to the Enginocr-in-Cliief with a view to getting the work done by co-operative labour. An application has been made to tho Government to admit tho "Linotype" free of duty to the Colony. Cabinet havo decided, however, that importers must pay tho 20 per cent, fixed by tho Customs Duties Act of fast session.
