| Carterton, May 5. _ I -\t the annual meeting of tho TaratahiI Carterton Road Board, Mr 11. R. Bunny ; was re-elected chairman without opposi- ' tion. A rate of three farthings in tho i pound over the whole ratable property in i the district was struck. The present ! indebtedness of the Board is £I4S6. | Last year it was .£I6OO odd, bel sides £2OO of liabilities. So that, by strict economy, the Board has bettered J its position financially to tho extent of j £-100. The expenditure of the Board for I tho past year exceeded £6OOO, and the cost j of management was £'257, thus showing 1 how economically the Board is worked. I The total rainfall registered in South i Wairarapa for the month of April was I 5'42-iu. Rain fell on 15 days.
During the quinquennial period since last census, the population of Carterton has increased 1G per cent. During tho same period Masterton has increased 12 per cent, aud Groytown has fallen off ono per cent. Mr James Rodder's valuable improved dairy farm, of 171- acres, at Dalefield, was put'up to auction by Mr G. A Fairbrother, at his Carterton rooms, but did not leach this reserve, which is said to be about £lO
per acre. Funds in aid of tho Dimmer Relief continue to (low in. His Worship tho Mayor of Carterton sent away 30 guineas last week. Another ball is being organised at Gladstone for the same worthy object. Mr Ernest Wiseman, a duly qualified solicitor from Wellington, is taking charge of Mr 11. S. Izard's Carterton ollice. Mr.J. A. Hudson has proved himself tho winner of Mr Izard's trophy for the best shot in the Carterton Rifle Club at 500 and 700 yards, handicap; Mr J. B. Bairstow winning Mr Deller's second prize.
