THE CENSUS.
Tin 1 total population of Wellington and suburbs, including the boroughs of Melrose, Onslow and Ivarori, and the population on ship-board in Port Nicholson, and exclusive of tho boroughs of Petone and Lower Hutt and tho county of Holt, is •1-2,281. This is an increase of 7122 on the figures of LSDI, including an equivalent for the borough of Ivarori, which was then a part of the Hutt County. The Registrar-General has received the following additional rough returns : Population.

Sl'l-CIAL TO TIIK Ni:\V Zk.W.ANU M.UI,. Stratford, I'd ay l. Tho rough returns already to hand show that the population of the town of Stratford has nearly quadrupled. The number was 313 in 1891, and is now over 1200. Tho population of Stratford County, covering an area of 000,000 acres, has doubled, being now over 50W. Townships of several hundred inhabitants have also sprung up at Midhirst, Ngaire, Toko, Mangaere and Strathmorc, places unknown at last census. The county, which was formed less than six years ago out of the outlying portions of four camties, has grown up, and is tho result of the progressive policy of the present Government, who have opened up vast areas through which the East road runs, 50 miles of which have been constructed by the Government, nearly 12 of which they have also metalled. Some 20 dairy factories and creameries have also been established during the same period. I venture to say there aro few instances of similar solid progress in the Colony, whichl is due to tho unlocking and opening up of Crown lands by tho Hon J. McKouzio,
