HOUSEBREAKERS IN CUBA STREET

Mr Herman statos that ho loft tho shop on: Tuesday night, and when his assistant returned in tho morning ho found the place "upside down," and over £SO worth of tobacco and cigars missing. On investigation, it was found that tho thiol or thiovca had gained entrance to the shop from tho roar of the premises. To gain access tj this part of the building was the easiest of matters, as Ilia Gear Company's shop at tho corner of Cuba and Ghu/.noo streets having beon palled down, tho only obstaclo was removed. Some time after closing hour on Saturday night a housebreaker attempted to enter To Aro House.

While Night-watchman Vickors was going his rounds between 11 'p.m. and midnight, he discovered that an attempt had boun made to enter the building by means of a back entrance. Tho thief had gone to work in tho same manner as tho ono who succeeded in making an entrance into Sinclair's store in Majoribanks street somo little time ago. An auger had been used on tho door, and a piece removed. Vickers at once communicated with the police and Mr James Smith, who wero quickly on tho scene. An investigation of tho building was mado, but nothing had bcou removed and no traces of tho thief wero found. Tho police have tho matter in hand.
