EDUCATION BOARD.
At the monthly meeting last week, on the motion of Mr Young, seconded by Mr Bradey, Mr J. R. Blair was re-elected chairman for tho ensuing year. Mr Robertson, tho newly-elected member, was placed on tho Technical School committe, vice Mr Fraser.
Tho pay sheet, amounting to £1192 8s Gd for salaries and sundry expenses, was passed for payment. A deputation from Newtown, consisting of Sir E. Gibbes and Messrs Davidson and Chinchen, waited on the Board with reference to the election of a committeo on Monday night. Mr Davidson said thoro were certain circumstances regarding tho voting which they wished the Board to enquire into, and for that purpose they handed over the papers to tho Board. Tho Board made a careful scrutiny of the papers, at the conclusion of which tno Chairman announced Messrs Cobham, Manning, McEldowney, Keane, Webb, Thornton, Fairchild, Wilson and Hamlin to bo elected a committeo. The first meeting of tho now committee, it was stated, will be held in the schoolroom on Friday night. Mr Buchanan was granted leave of absenco, and tho consideration of tho motion regardin» aided schools, of which ho had given notice, was postponed until next mooting.
The resignation of Mrs Swan, of Kaitawa School, was accepted. Tho Kaipororo Committee asked tho Board to take over tho school, which is au aided school, and to appoint a teacher. Tho Chairman said if it was taken over it would involve tho building of a now school, as the present site was unsuitable Dr Newman moved that the school bo taken over and a now sito arranged for. This was carried. The To Whiti Aided School Committee wrote asking the Board to pay the teachor'a salary. The question stands over until next meeting, when the chairman will bring forward a motion dealing with tin* whole question of aided schools.
Mr W. Lambert applied that his daughter's scholarship should bo made available at Auckland. Tho application was granted. Miss Banks was permanently appointed to the Shannon School.
The question of repairs to tho Carterton School was left in tho hands of the Board's carpenter. Tho Board confirmed the appointment of Mr Bryant to complete tho Ohariu committee.
Mrs Mangnuson was appointed sowing teacher at Whakataki.
Certain arrangements in reference to tho position of head-mistress of tho Mount Cook Girils' School were authorised to bo made by the chairman. Tho Board resolved to promote a country teacher to tho charge of tho Kaitawa school, and to invito applications for tho toacherships at Ngaturi and Tokomaru.
