EIGHT HOURS COMMITTEE.
At a meeting cf the Eight Hours Committee on Tuesday, Mr T. W. Brookcr (president) in the 1 chair, Mr A. R. Hislop (Engineers' Society) was appointed vice-president in placo of Mr'T. '.V. Hogg (Bakers' Union), who had resigned from the committee. Mr Hogg was appointed an honorary life member of tho committee on account of his past services. The Bakers' Union wrote stating Hat Mr G. Harris had been appointed to reprosmt them on the committee in place of Mr The Tailoresses' Union wrote stating that Messrs t,'. ,S. Smith, P. Brown, G. Plirdy and \V. Worth had been appointed to represent flic Union on the eoaunitfe:. MrW. U, Haselden, solicitor, wrote stating that as he was tie- last president of the Wellington Liberal Association it had occurred In him that the time war. opportuno to address the' heads of all the Labour Associations and the Women's Political and Democratic Leagues, and inviting them to attend a preliminary meeting with a viow of establishing a united organisation which would practically control the next general election in this city. It should, ho said, bo their object to avoid the unhappy division which occurred at the last general election, and in order to do so it seemed necessary to begin the work in good time. The letter was adversely criticised, and the meeting decided to reply that as the Fight Hours Union deals only with eight hours matters, the subject was outside their deliberations.
The secretary was instructed to forward certain papers with reference to the now rules to the Registrar of Friendly Societies. The appointment of sub-committees wis held over until the next meeting of tho committee.
