CARTERTON.

At a meeting of tho Wairarapa South County Council, tho balance-sheet for the year showed a credit at the bank of .£321 7s lOd. A poor rate of 1-lOth of a penny in the pound over tho whole ratable lands within the county was struck to meet the demands of the United District Charitable Aid Board.

Councillor Phillips applied to the County Council at its last meeting for a grant of JBS to Mr Murray towards the cost of surveying a track across the ranges to Otaki. The Council declined to consider the request until they had received Mr Llewellyn Smith’s report from the Government.

With reference to the question of subsidising tho Featherston Road Board to keep tiie road over the Eimufaka hill in repair, the County Council has passed a resolution recognising their liability to do so, and as the North Wairarapa County is equally interested, it has been decided to ask their aid.

The first show of tho Wairarapa Horticultural and Industrial Society, at Carterton, proved a thorough success, both in the number of entiles and the attendance ol thopublio. Thechrysauthemum display was excellent, Miss Bunny, Messrs H. S. Izard, E. Hale and T. Kempton being the chief exhibitors. Tho collections of apples were remarkable for their number and excellence.

Among the largest exhibitors wero Messrs Blomquist, T. Sparks, M. Smith, E. \Y . Dorset, C. Goodin and Mrs Hooper. Messrs Izard and Buchanan had splendid entries in grapes, and Air J. Blomquist in pears and medlars. The vegetable class included some of the finest to lie had, Messrs Tunniclilf, Stoadloy, Miller, Buchanan, Dorset, Izard, Kempton, Herrick, H. Engle, M. Smith, J. Grant and 11. Rasmussen being the chief prizewinners. In tho farmers’ sections of vegetables Messrs J. Smith, A. Booth, W. C. Buchanan and W. Booth were to tho front, S. Ilaigh, 11. Englo and W. A. Herrick also scoring. Thero was a splendid exhibition of locally-made jams, pickles, bottle fruits and vegetables and wines on view. The home-work class was strongly represented. At the show, over £•’> were taken at the aftornoon tea-room and £2l at tho doors. The McKenzie-Parkor family provided an excellent orchestra, and all the violins used wore fitted up with tho AlcKenzicEising patented improvement, and they did effective work. A bowling club has been established at Carterton, with a membership of 54 at £1 each. Tenders have been invited for ground suitable for a bowling green, and next year it is hoped io have the green ready for play. ]

The Carterton School cleared 1G guineas by their recent sport 3. Tho local paper is strongly advocating the formation of a Museum of Agriculture as recommended by Mr T. W Kirk, Government Biologist, in his report. It would certainly be a boon to farmers to be able to visit an establishment of the sort when coining to town. Although not a Government supporter, the said paper, in an editorial, eulogises tho Department of Agriculture, and gives it credit for an “ earnest doUre to promote the welfare of farmers ” in the dairy, the field and the orchard.

A hearty welcome was accorded the Rev S. J. Garliek, the newly-appointed minister to the Wairarapa Wesleyan Circuit, and Mrs Garliek, by the local Wesleyaus and friends. The church was crowded on the occasion.
