MASTERTON.

The Masterton Borough Council, on the casting vote of the Mayor, has decided not to join with the Upper Plain Irrigation Board in providing head-works for a water supply. An old resident named Louis Holmes, who has been out of work and drinking of late, left his home last week, and expressed his intention of doing away with himself. He was found some hours afterwards lying in a prostrate condition. Dr Butomont was sent for, and, seeing symptoms of poisoning, administered emetics, with the result that the man is now recovering. At asocial and dance in the Drillhall in aid of the Brunner Relief Fund, about 200 people wero present, and dancing was kept going until well into the morning. A Chinaman named Tan Keo has been declared bankrupt on the petition of certain Wellington creditors. The poll on tho proposal to raiso .£2OOO by the Trust Lands Trustees for the erection of a Town Ball was taken on Monday Tho weather was very unfavourable,and this prevented the electors going to tho poll, and as half of those on the roll were required to carry the poll the proposal was lost. The voting was : —For a Town Hall, 495; against, 38; informal, 7. It is probable another poll will bo taken. The old brewery situated at the south end of the town, belonging to Mr Thomas Breons, was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. The building was insured for .£■loo in tho New Zealand oliice.
