THE LEVIN-GREATFORD DEVIATION.

Mr J. C. McKorrow, Land Purchase Commissioner, has reported adversely on the proposed deviation of the railway lme from Levin to Groatford, via Foxton, referred to in last year’s Public Works Statement. The concluding portion of his report is as follows : —Although it would bo a decided advantage to shorten the distance by or 10 miles, and to save from one-half to one hour on traffic from all places north of Groatford, to and from Wellington, tho present traffic would not warrant the outlay, for it would practically mean tho division of tho present traffic over tho two lines, with additional cost oi maintenance and additional train service without a corresponding increase of traffic. When tho through lino to Auckland is completed and open for traffic it may bo worth wliilo to consider tho question of constructing this deviation. The settlers between Bulls and Foxton, although labouring under disabilities already mentioned, as regards railway conveniences, are much better off than settlers in other parts of the Colony. I would adviso tho Government to defer taking steps in regard to this line until thero is a considerable increase of traffic.
