Sirt, —In your issuo of last weok, quoting from fcho Oamaru Mail, you attribute some remarks to mo wlioro 1 am said to havo recognised it as a duty of Government to find work for the unemployed. 1 havo not visited Oamaru, and your contemporary must lie quoting from some very unreliable source, for while 1 recognise the claims of common humanity that no man should be allowed to starve, and as a last resource that Government must interfere, still, I have never urged anything beyond this, and 1 suspect that the statement you also make in reference to Captain Russell has about equal warrant in fact. —I am, Ac, Jno.
