At tho usual fortnightly mooting of the City Council last week Mr T. Young appeared on behalf of Mr AYarno and asked that he he supplied with the reasons why his client was refused a licenso as cabdriver. This matter had not been reached on tho order paper, however, when the Council roso

Mr D. P. Fisher introduced a deputation from tho Carriers’ Union, and asked that telephonic communication be made between the Exchange and tho shelter sheds ; that an inspector bo appointed to look alter vehicular traffic, and also to regulate the granting of licenses to porters. At preedit there was a war going on between tho porters, tho cabmen and the carriers. He also drew attention to tho fact that the trains and cabs carried excessive luggage. Councillor Myers moved that tho request for a telephone bo acceded to, but tho motion was lost.

An application for a street lamp to bo placed at tho entrance to Mulligan’s avenue was granted. An application by tho Wellington and Manawatu Kailway Company for repairs to Davis street was referred to the City Surveyor. It was decided to refer an application for the formation of a footpath in Mount nti'cot to the Public Works Commit too.

Inspector Pender wrote to the effect that tho request that the police should see that tho by-laws were enforced with regard to tho overcrowding of the trams would he attended to.

Tho Finance Committee recommended: (1) That tho recommendations of the Drainage Engineers with respect to the Dabcock-Wilcox boilers be adopted by the Council; (2) that Mr Albion Gooding be offered £25 in full settlement of his claim for alleged injury to his property; (3) that the agreement with the Drainage Engineer bo renewed till completion of the drainage works; (!) that tho application of G. E. Davis, Water Inspector, for an increaso of wages be not acceded to; (5) that a reply be sent to tho Now Zealand Electrical Syndicate that tho Council is unable to reduce their valuation; (<>) that Mr A. Boardman he paid the sum of £2O in settlement of his claim for assistance in tho construction of Karuri crescent.

The recommendations wore adopted with the exception of clause l, which was held over for consideration; claused, referred to the Public Works Committee; and clause 6, which was struck out. Tho recommendations of the Public Works Committee were adopted with tho exception of clause 1, "That the holidays for tho workmen employed on the drainage works bo the same as arc given to the workmen on the general staff,” which was struck out by six votes to five.

There was some discussion as to tho fish market, but a motion by Councillor Devine that the market be built at once was lost by 0 votes to 5, and the clause was passed. Applications for tho position of stationkeeper were referred to tho Fire Brigade Committee.

In v>as decided to hold an adjourned

meeting of tho Council on Thursday next for tho purpose of consideriug tho report of the City Surveyor on tho high-water levels, and also for dealing with the remaining business on tho order paper. Accounts amounting to ,£2980 17a 7d were passed for payment.

Tho Council adjourned at 25 minutes to 11 o’clock.
