NEW FRENCH STAMPS.

It was announced at the close of (ho lust public competition for new designs for the postage-stamps of the French liepublic that nothing suitable, or rather nothing better than the current stamps, had been received. Wo hear now, however, that she lias at last succeeded in finding an artistic design to symbolise the Republic. Uis said to represent a girl or a very young woman “of noble and winning appearance" with shoulders protected by plate armour. Quo hand is holding an olive branch, and the other rests upon the hilt of a sword. When it new design is adopted, and applied to all the colonies and depi licit iieies (more numerous than those of any other country except Great Britain), it will give the collectors something to do, and, perhaps, induce them to take a little more notice of tho present issues than has been flic fashion hitherto. There is nothingspecu lativo about French stamps, they are numerous, but only illustrate a most admirable consistency.
