MINING.

PERTH, January Lu.. A important development lias occurred in the Hannan's Central mine, Kalgoorlie, where a splendid lode 12t't wide lias been struck at the hundred feet level. Every pan of dirt washed shows the colour, the yield being up to half an ounce to the dish. The discovery , proves that a lode runs through the salt bush flats. Phenomenally rich stone has been struck in the Croesus mine. Perth, January 23. Wonderfully rich stone has been discovered by Polades and party in a 50ft shaft at Findrimie. Three men have dollied loozs gold per day. The last crushing of 250 tons stone from the Great Boulder mine yielded 13S8ozs gold. A rich find is reported near Edwards' mine. The Norseman field has " petered out.' Sydney, January 27. For months past the accommodation on the largely increased fleet of steamers trading to Western Australia has been taxed to the utmost with departing gold seekers. The rush still continues, but by ominous signs the tide has turned. Little by little the backward setting stream is .swelling in volume. At first only those who had made their pile and the faint-hearted turned th°.ir faces eastward, but now each returning steamer lands an increasing number of men who, after giving- the Western Eldorado a fair trial, make their way home sorrowful and disappointed. The latest among many arrivals in Sydney are a number of Newcastle miners. They spent several months prospecting, undergoing terrible hardships from thirst and pri/ations, but only succeeded in getting rid of what little money they possessed. Their predictions as to the future of the Western fields are decidedly of a very gloomy character. In Perth they met hundreds of men stranded, trying to raise their return passage money. At Coolgardie they state there is not the least show for a working man, and if one is caught asking for food he is arrested and imprisoned. On the wearisome tramp back . from Kalgoorlie they noticed along the road the graves of numbers of wanderers who perished in the stony, sun-dried desert. In Adelaide they met a number of men on their way West, who were so impressed with their experiences that they abandoned their intention of making the journey, and returned home.
