THE HOLIDAY.

The weather was unfavourable on the 22nd, as a high wind arose early, continued all day, and became a gale after nightfall. Notwithstanding this, holiday-makers were many. Both railway lines were extensively patronised, and on the Government line about 3500 people travelled, nearly 2500 of that number going to see Brooklet win the Cup. About 4000 excursionists were conveyed on the Manawatu line, Plimmerton, Crofton and Khandallah being the most favoured localities. Day's Bay, as usual, attracted crowds of picnickers. Mahterton, January 22. Anniversary Day was observed as a close holiday bore, numbers of people having gone to Wellington or to private and public picnics. A picnic in connection witli St. Matthew's Church was held at Lansdown. Tho only local attraction was the Fire Brigade competition in the Oval.
