Melbourne, January 20. Numbers of disappointed fortune-hunters are returning' from Western Australia. Judging from a letter received from a prospector at Menzies, the wonder is that so many are able to hang on at all. The writer says hour is selling at £65 per ton; the small loaf at Is 3d ; chaff at 9d per lb ; meat at Is 3d per lb (when procurable, and then only mutton); fowls at two guineas per pair ; eggs at 12s to 18s per dozen ; water at 8a per gallon. Board costs from three to four guineas per week. Fever is very prevalent, the average death rate being three per week. Perth, January 20. The gold yield for the colony last year was 231,5000 z, an increase of 31,6'J00z on the previous year. The outlook has improved greatly during the week, owing to the rain, but a much more copious fall is required to properly break up the drought and give sufficient water for crushing purposes. Feeling on the goldfields runs high against the influx of Chinese. Two who arrived under engagement to a hotelkeeper were forced by the miners to leave the township. Sydney, January 20. At a meeting of the Great Mercury shareholders, an offer on behalf of an Auckland resident to furnish capital for share interest in the mine was declined. It was resolved to call up the capital. Auckland, January 16. The sale of the Alburnia mine, Thames, has been practically completed in London by the cabling of a £IO6O deposit. Auckland, January 20.
