THE URIWERA SURVEYS.

The Premier has received a telegram from Wairoa, stating that the Hon Mr Carroll arrived there yesterday week, after most interesting though arduous trip through the Uriwera Country. Mr Carroll left last week for Waikaremoana as there was liable to be obstruction by the Natives of that place, owing to their not being aware that the dispute had been amicably settled with Te Whiti. A very large meeting was held at Tenuti and the arrangements previously made were confirmed. Mr Phillips and his survey party accompanied Mr Carroll as far as Huiarua. This is the only remaining trig, station Mr Phillips has to erect to complete the work allotted to him. The weather has been very bad in the district, and there have been heavy rain and snow storms. The party had to camp two nights on the road> and the food supply running short they experienced some hardship. Mr Clayton, the surveyor on the Waikaremoana side, is laid up with a severe cold, but Mr Phillips is carrying on the work. It has been arranged that Mr Phillips shall take up the Maungopaota survey, which is the most difficult point to reach. The next to be done will be Nguoko; then Ngapaira, and finally Pukutapu. Mr Clayton with his men will fix a trig, station at Huiarua. It is thought that in a fortnight's time the whole of the trig, stations will be fixed and from these trigs, they will be able to fix the major triangulation. It is now beyond doubt that it was owing to outside influence that the Maoris attempted to obstruct the surveys.
