THE TOWN CLERK'S REPORT.

The Town Clerk submitted his sixth annual report at the meeting of the City Council last week. He states that the financial results of the year must be considered satisfactory. The receipts generally were in excess of the estimates and some items of expenditure were less than was expected, the result being that the actual increase in the overdraft did not exceed .£I7OO. A sum of <£62o was paid off the Te Aro reclamation overdraft, beinghalf the receipts forrent of the sections of Te Aro reclaimed land already let. The valuation of the city for this year, completed in February last, amounted to .£349,841, an increase of .£9056 upon last year. The,valuation of the city in 1873, when the Corporation started its career, was ,£76,210, while the population at that date was in round numbers 10,000, as against 35,000 at present. In 1873, when the highest value put upon any single - property was £4OO, there were three properties valuad at .£4OO annual value. Now there are 58 properties valued at, £4OO and upwards.
