ENGLISH RACING.

From Our Own Correspondent. FLAT RACING EE-COMMENCBS. ' - , London, March 30. After the long dull winter we have had everyone was glad to get back to business again, and on Monday last when the historic saddling bell at Lincoln rang in flat racing for 1895, few familiar professionals belonging to the noble army of bettors, backers, bounders, bilkers and "the.boys” were absent from the CarholmeiJ Not that “the boys” are permitted to be much en evidence at Lincoln. The Messrs Ford employ the Jockey Club officials to keep the rings clear and very well it is done.

Sport on the opening afternoon seldom proves of a particularly thrilling character, but there is the betting on the big handicap to watch. Up to Monday few commissions really worth the name had been worked. El Diablo (6yrs, Bst 81b) was the nominal winter favourite, and a little money had dribbled on Amandier (aged, Bst 31b), Dumbarton (4yrs, 9st) and Lottie’s Dude / (3yrs, 6st 101 b). The investment of =£loo would, however, have brought anything else to the head of affairs. On Saturday Lottie’s Dude was alleged to be beaten in a. trial 'by Shanerotha, and Macready, who ran third last year, went down before The Owl. Neither of the animals were, however, greatly shaken in the betting '.THE BAIT LI Y ANY STAKES. Sport commenced in fine bright sunshine with the Trial Stakes, in which Mr Cohen's Green Lawn (4yrs, 9st 111 b), by Kendal—, Bud a, easily defeated six others. Green Lawn being the trial horse of Missal for the big handicap the latter came with a rush in the betting, and from 15's was backed down to 100 to 8. A Selling Plate followed, in which Charlie Archer threw a successful main with Armoire (3yrs, 9sfc 51b) by Hagioscope—Excellence, 'there were nine runners, and the price of 8 to.,i on offer against the winner did not look like one of Archer’s good things.' The filly Won, however, though only by a short head, ' from Mr Miller's Blank Day (3yrs, 9st 51b), ' Mr Jackson's Watch Tower (syrs,'lOst 7lb) third. It then transpired a nice s.p. coup had been landed, and that all the London bookies were “ touched ” for substantial sums. The Northern Welter, over a mile, fell to the favourite, Queen’s Jester (3yrs, Bst 61b), by Sycophant—Poem, and the first two-year-old race of the season to General Owen Williams’ filly by Hambletonian—Panacea. There were a dozen runners for the latter, but barring Mr L. de Kothschild’s Yiolecta they were not much to look at. The Batthyany Stakes is a handicap worth 500, sovs, and run over the straight five furlongs. On Monday there were fourteen runners, the favourite being M. Lebaudy's Pet of the Fancy (Syrs, Sst 51b) at 9 to 2, Mr Ryan's Chasseur (Syrs, 7st 131 b) being also well backed at 6 to 1. Bar these two nothing carried really heavy metal, though at 10 to 1 Mr*De Rothschild’s Grig (3yis, 7st 8lb), Mr Marshall’s Ganges (4yrs, Sst 51b), and Mr Bankes’ Sally Brass 11. (Syrs, Sst lib) were occasionally backed. The race proved a good thing for Grig (by Crafton —Merrie Lassie), as after the favourite and Chasseur had looked well below the distance Mr Leo de Eothchild’s colt shot out and won in a canter by threequarters of a length from Chasseur, with Sir J. B. Maple’s Estar third.

LINCOLNSHIRE HANDICAP. The first bio- handicap of the season is run over a straight mile and worth 1000 sovs. The roll of winners includes some good horses, notably Vulcan, Controversy, Bendigo, Veracity and Wise Man. On Tuesday there were 15 runners only, the field being- the smallest since Royal Rake was successful in 1870. In 1574, when Archer won on Tomahawk, there were 35 starters, and The Gunner in 1875 and Footstep in 1877 each defeated 3j_ others,

iDireetly the appealed Gdlbiibl North’s El Diablo’ (6yrSj Sst 8lb) was marked dowti “ good goods,” and weight of money at Hat made him a strong favourite M<§to I. Next in demand were Amandier '(aged, Sst 31b), The Owl (3yrs, 6st ’Bib) and Dumbarton (4yrs> 9s t) at 9 to 1 each, and at this pri'Ce the Jubilee winner of 1892, Euclid (Byfs, 7st 121 b), was also well backed-. Later, however, Mr Duncan’s colt y-as easier, and 12 to 1 could be had. Missal (4yrs, 6st 131 b) had friends at 10 to 1, and of the outsiders Carriek (aged; Sst 21b), at 100 to 6, seemed most fahbied-.

The Lincolnshire Handicap, of 1000 sovs, added to a ■SWCepstakes of 20 sovs each, 10 ft, Unless declared; winners extra; the Second received 50 sovs ; entrance, iS ; sovs, the only forfeit if declared. The Straight Mile. (48 subs, 14 of whom declared.) Mr C. Duncan’s Euclid, by Prism, dam by Speculum—Nydia, 6yrs4, 7st 12lb (G. BroWn) 1 Colonel North’s El Diablo, Byrs, Bst Blb (M. Cannon) 2 Baron de Rothschild’s Amandier, aged, Sst 31b ... ... ... (T. Loates) 3 M, L. Niguet’s Sancho Panza, 4yrs, 6st 131 b (carried 7st lib) Allsopp) 4 Also ran —-D umbarton, 4yrs, 9st; Carrick, aged, Sst 21b ; Xury, 4yrs, 7st 131 b ; Marne via, 4yrs, 7st 21b ; Missal, 4yrs, 6st 131 b; Earl of Annandale, Byrs, Gst lllb ; Lottie’s Dude, 3yrs, 6st 101 b; San Giovanni, syrs, 6st 81b; The Owl, 3yrs, 6st 61b. Betting —5 to 1 El Diablo, 9 to 1 each Amandier, The Owl, and Dumbarton, 10 to 1 Missal, 100 to 8 Euclid, 100 to 7 Lottie’s Dude, undecided Sancho Panza, 100 to 16 Carriek, 20 and 25 to 1 others. The race : Missal got the best of a good start and made the running with Marnovia, Sancho Panza, and Earl of Annandale in close pursuit, and the favourite Amandier and Euclid next. They kept this order for rather more than six furlongs, when Missal compounded and shortly after Sancho Panza, and Earl of Annandale were also in distress. Euclid then went to the front and at the distance was challenged by the favourite and Amandier. Neither, however, could collar him, and, drawing away, the son of Prism and Nydia won by a length and a half, with Amandier a respectable third. Euclid, by Prism —Nydia, belongs to Mr Duncan of the Stock Exchange, and had been unfortunate since he scored as a three-year-old at Kempton, running in upwards of a dozen big races without securing a winning bracket. He is engaged in Kempton Jubilee Stakes this spring, but a 141 b penalty brings his weight up to Bst 91b, under which the old horse can scarcely be dangerous. El Diablo ran well and with Euclid away would have won easily enough, but Dumbarton cut up wretchodly and the three-year-olds were never prominent. BROCKLESBY STAKES. Twenty-one runners went to the post for this event, but I have only time now to say it fell to Mr Wallace Johnstone’s Kyoto (by Miguel—Lena) who beat I’. Anson’s Salebei by a head. London, May 10. At the Kempton Park Meeting to-day the Royal Two-year-old Plate was won by Mr Leopold de Rothschild’s hr c St. Frusquin by St. Simon —Isabel, the same owner’s Gulistan running second and Captain | Fife’s Funny Boat third.
