HORSES FOR THE HOME MARKET.
Several visitors from the Mother Country who are qualified to speak with authority have been much struck by and have greatly admired the excellence of the Clydesdale horses and the heavy draught stock generally they have seen in their journeyings through the country districts. The market value in London of horses of this sort ranges from .£6O to .£BO, while here they only bring about half the price. En fact, a recent shipment from Canterbury only brought about one-quarter these prices at auction in Wellington. There is, therefore, a considerable margin of profit open for shippers to realise, and evidently a good trade may be done by breeders of Clydesdale stock if they are enterprising enough to test the Home market. The Government are so impressed by the prospects of developing a lucrative industry in this direction that with a view of putting it to a practical trial they are prepared to offer inducements for a shipment to England. It will probably be made in June next either by the lonic or the Doric, as these are considered to be the most suitable vessels for the purpore.
