PALMERSTON NOTES.
The news of the sad death of Mr J. R. Harper was received with great regret in Palmerston. Deceased, who was wellknown and highly respected in business circles in this town, was an active member of the Masonic order, and this year occupied the position of Senior Warden in the Manawatu Kilwinning Lodge. He was a member of the Royal Arch Chapter, holding the offices of Conductor in the E,M. Lodge and Senior Warden in the Mark. His remains will be brought here to-day, and he will be buried with Masonic honours on Sunday. His life was insured for .£1450 in the A.M.P. Society, .£SOO in the Government Office, and in the Accident Insurance Society.
The following are the officers of the Palmerston Literary Society for the ensuing year:—President, Rev Mr Thomson (re-elected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs Webster, Attwood and Rutherfurd; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. W. Mitchell; editor, Mr Astbury (re-elected); committee, Messrs Halliwell, J. Laiirenson, Barry and Nicholson. The session will be opened on April 4th with a " social." Palmerston North, March 26. The Manawatu polo team on their return from Christchurch are to be given a suitable reception by the members of the Polo Club. The Orchestral Society has made arrangements to hire music from the Wellington Orchestral Society. At last night's practice the overtures to "Maritana" and "The Bohemian Girl" and a movement from "Cavalleria Rusticana" were played, and are to be given at the next concert. The Manawatu Mounted Rifles had a competition on Saturday for Mr Colville's trophy, Sergeant Scott winning with a
score of 32, including the two points of his handicap. Mrs D. Matheson, Bunnythorpe, has commenced a series of cooking lessons in Palmerston. The first was given last night in the Presbyterian Hall before a large audience.
