FEATHERSTON.

Featherston, March 25,

I am informed on good authority that Mr J. Cress, of Carterton, has bought out Mr F. Hiley, of the Tauherenikau Hotel, and takes possession from to-day. A meeting of the River Board was held on Saturday afternoon, Mr A. Matthews in the chair. The following members were also present .—Messrs J. O. Bidwill, W. O. Williams, Fred Pearce and H. Hume. The treasurer reported a credit balance of .£56 19s Id. Letters were read from Piripi te Mari, Aporo Harry and other Maoris asking for permission to fish at the mouth of the Lake while it-is closed, The Chairman reported that when these communications had been received, permission had been granted on the understanding that should the Lake require opening they would receive one day's notice of such intention. He stated that the water was still rising, and that already it was damaging property, and there was a chance of a flood coming down any time now, as there is snow on the hills. It was resolved to give the notice to the Natives, and to open the Lake on Tuesday.
