CARTERTON.

Carterton, March 25. A conference between three members of the Greytown Borough Council and two members of the Taratahi-Carterton Road Board was held on Saturday, when it was agreed to recommend to the Minister of Public Works that the construction and maintenance of the proposed bridge over, the Waiohine River atMatarawa should-be under the control of the Greytown Borough Council. As one of the Road Board representatives was absent the question of apportioning the share each district bear in the cost of maintenance was held . over, but a resolution "was passed, subject to the Road Board's approval, that the division be in equal proportions. Heavy rain has fallen during the last, two days, which must have raised the drooping spirits of the farmers, for the feed was beginning to dry up everywhere. Of apples this year, the early ones sell as low as 6s per cwt. Late apples always command a much better price, and those about to plant out orchards would do much better by growing late sorts. I.am afraid this rain has not come in time to save the turnip crops, most of them being too far gone owing to the blight and drought to have a chance of recovering l . There has been a drop in the milk supply at one factory alone of 600 gallons per day during the last two weeks. This will give you some idea of the effect of the drought. The timber in the Wairarapa, at the south end of it, is just about cut".;' out. Most of the millers have moved up into the Forty-mile Bush, and this is having the effect of lessening the trade in the towns. Since Mr Baillie and another closed their mills in Greytown it has made a difference to Greytown of something like .£IOOO a month in the circulation of money. It is to this cause rather than the Saturday half-holi-day' that I should attribute the falling off in trade in that town. Mr W. Burt, who had a mill in Ngakonui, is about to take up Mr Waterson's bush at Dalefield, where there is about two years' cutting. Mr James Stevens lost about .£3OO by a fire in Carter's bush the other day. He had just purchased the standing bush before the fire went through it. " '"/'■' ,
