TARIFF COMMISSION.

Dunedin, March 9. The members of the Tariff Commission yesterday inspected two inventions by Wallers —one a machine for extracting oil and grease from cotton waste and yolk from wool which produces lanoline, worth about 4s per pound. About half a pint of the substance can be obtained from an ordinary fleece of wool in the grease. He has also invented a process for the extraction of acid from timber, some samples of which were shown. This process has the effect of seasoning timber in an effective way and in a very short space of time. Evidence was given pointing outanomalies in the tariff, and making suggestions by which they could be avoided. John Christie, plumber, asked for the removal of the duty on plumbers’ sanitary work, which could not be manufactured in the Colony, as the charges were prohibitive. He also asked for the removal of the duty on lead pipes. Thomas Stevenson, electrical engineer, urged that a duty should be put on highclass engines so as to enable machinists to compete. Dunedin, March 11. The Tariff Commission was waited on by the president and a number of members of the Protection Society. After listeningto their, remarks the Commission decided that as statements were not evidence, what the deputation had said be not included in the evidence. Alexander Burt (A. and T. Burt) and Archibald Morrison (Morrison and Co.) pointed out the hardship of mining, dairy and agricultural implements being imported free while all other machinery for manufacturing purposes was dutiable.

They advocated that all such machinery should be put on an equal footing-. Charles Rawlins, Lawrence, suggested that certain articles used by miners—powder, hardware, leather, and other things —should be admitted free. The Commission leave on Wednesday for Oamaru.
