RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

VICTORIA RACING CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING. Melbourne, March 2. The weather was beautifully fine for the opening day of the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting, and despite the oounter attraction of the cricket match there was a very good attendance in the afternoon. The New South Wales horses made an auspicious start by running into places. In the Hopeful Stakes the winner, Humphrey Oxenham’s Waterfall, is a raking two-year-old by Niagara from Little Wanzer. The St. Leger was a complete boil over, The Harvester pulling up much distressed. Messrs Miller Bros., who own Preston, are doubtful about starting the St. Leger winner for the Australian Cup, preferring to reserve him for the Champion Stakes. The betting was very spirited over the Newmarket Handicap, for which Barbarian, who sustained injury yesterday, was the only absentee from the 37 final acceptors. Laundress won comfortably enough at the finish, and Carmody’s stable connections threw in for a good stake. The time was excellent considering that the field was despatched from a standing start. Carnage displayed something like his true form in the Essendon Stakes, stalling off a brilliant run by Patron in the last half furlong in the best possible manner. The following are the results : - Hopeful Stakes, of 200 sovs. Five furlongs. Mr H. Oxenham’s br c Waterfall, 2yrs, by Niagara—Little Wanzer (Delaney) 1 Creme D’Or ... ... (Cook) 2 Coolalta ; (Harris) 3 Twelve horses started! Betting—s to 2 agst Waterfall, 4 to 1 Creme D’Or, 5 to 1 Coolalta. Betting—s to 2 on The Harvester, 5 to 1 agst Preston, 8 to 1 Bonnie Scotland, 20 to 1 Maroon. Preston dashed away with the lead, followed by the favourite and Bonnie Scotland. At the seven - furlong post, The Harvester momentarily headed Preston, but as the field swept round the home turn Preston assumed command, and led into the straight, where the favourite Was under the whip. Miller’s colt, amidst ths

cries of the bookmakers, came down the straight full of running, and Avon cleverly by two lengths, Maroon defeating the favourite for second place by a length, Bonnie Scotland fourth, Cobbitty easing off. Time, 3min 13 *sec. Newmarket Handicap, of 750 so vs; second, 150 sovs ; and third, 75 sovs out of the stake. Three-quarters of a mile. From a very good start Disparity was first away closely followed by The, Merry Girl, Tassy, Mohican and Yanitas. After half a furlong was left behind, Mohican took up the running, Yanitas lying next, with *■ Disparity, Havoc, Broken Hill, Fortunptus and Ganmain in more immediate attendance. Entering the course proper, Idolator, on the rails, showed out promptly, while ■> Esau’s colours were also very conspicuous; then came the main body headed by Mohican, Erl King, Yanitas, Tassy and Laundress. Esau had the pride of position as the field approached the distance-.post, Vanitas lying secondhand Laundress third, the nearest of the others being Idolator and Ganmain. One hundred and fifty yards from home Laundress shot out from the others, and taking up the inside running swept past the post the winner, a length in front of Vanitas, who in turn held a length and a quarter advantage oyer Idolator, Solanum, only a neck away, foutth, Bessie McCarthy fifth, Fortunatus sixth, Ganmain seventh, Tullamore eighth, “the. last three being Capstans,' Mainstay ' "and Kelp. Time, lmin 15sec. Bessie McCarthy was never observed during the race until towards the finish, a fact which proves conclusively she failed to get a clear run until too late. . Melbourne, March 5. The second day of the Y.E.C. Autumn Meeting was a most disagreeable day, a hurricane of wind blowing with clouds of dust until towards the'close of the day. , The attendance was terribly meagre, but speculation was very spirited. The Maiden Stakes was a mere fiasco,

only Millers’ colt Leeway tackling Maroon, whilst the followers of the Mill Park stable backed it so stoutly that, although the bookmakers demanded odds of 2 to 1 about Maroon, they would not lay more than 5 to 4 about Leeway at the close.

f The supporters of Mr W. R. Wilson’s stable sent Havoc out a pronounced favourite for the Cup, and he won handsomely, though the forward position obtained by The Harvester at the finish proved beyond a doubt that, had Cook not been sd kind to the Derby Avinner last week, the double, St, Leger and Australian Cup, was fairly Avithiri his grasp. Messrs Miller were very confident about. Preston’s chance for the Cup, but. a gale of wind blowing right doAvn the straight completely settled the - little fellow, who finished sixth. Havoc’s win was a very popular one. Sternchaser ran disappointingly, and curled up towards the finish. The following are the results:— Maiden Stakes, of 200 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr W. R. Racing- along by the river, Wyvern took charge,-folloived by Preston, Strahan, Idolator, Straightfire, Sternchaser and Havbd, ; - The Harvester still racing in the rear. Passing the abattoirs, six furlongs from home, Donation was in the van, his nearest attendants being Preston, Idolator, Sternchaser, lolanthus, Strahan and Straighfire, with Havoc coming fast. Idolator was first to enter the straight, with Havoc in hot pursuit, after whom came Sternchaser, Preston and Donation, whilst The Harvester was seen, threading his way through from the extreme rear.
