CHARITABLE AID.

The weekly meeting of the Trustees of the Charitable Aid Board took place Tues 4 day afternoon; present —Rev H. VanStaveren (chairman), and Messrs T. W. McKenzie, S. Lancaster, F. Bradey, G. H. Baylis, C. E. Willeston and R. C. Kirk. In accordance with a resolution .passed at the last meeting the first batch of recipients of relief appeared before the Trustees, and were questioned as to their circumstances. The Secretary Reported having given relief to a poor woman who had been confined since last meeting of still-born twins. She had no coverings but a few rags, and there was no food in the house for the mother and the other children. When the secretary tcalled thehusband was not at home; he had been given to drink. Blankets and food were supplied. The husband appeared : before the' Trustees, and promised to turn over a new leaf. Rations for a month were ordered. The next case was that of a young married couple with two little children, who for want of other accommodation were liv-' ingin the wife’s mother’s wash-lfouse.-They had only half a blanket between them, v

no ’.sheets. Both the young man and his mother were natives of Wellington. Although an able-bodied young fellow, he had been 15 months out of work. He a cordial maker. Rations and a pair of blankets were ordered, the man, in accqrdancie with the rule laid down by the Trustees, to work out the cost, The action of the master of the Home in discharging a man who had refused to go into the bath was approved. Another inmate, who had fallen in with a shipmate and got drunk, was cautioned. An old man, who said he arrived in Wellington 55 years ago, applied for admission to the Home. He said he held' a master mariner’s certificate (first-class), had lost <£6ooo in mining at Reefton, and had had a

paralytic stroke. It was agreed to admit him for a month. The sum of 5s a week was granted towards the rent of a poor woman whose husband is in gaol for beating,.her; and a similar grant was ordered for a fortnight in the case of a young married woman with two children. Her husband was expected by one of the direct steamers;-Sixty-five males and 21 females r were reported to be in the Home. ' , A meeting of the Hospital Trustees was held on Tuesday. Allen and J. Collins, .arid the Rev H. Van Staveren. It was decided on the motion of Mr G. Allen, seconded by Mr C. W. Brown, that a circular relative to the Pair Rent Bill be received. A brief discussion took place on the question of admitting patients to the Hospital, and it was decided that in future all persons seeking admission from Wellington must be recommended by one of the Trustees. The chairman said that

during the month of February 117 & pints of wine, spirits and malt liquor had been

dispensed to 17 patients, or about seven pints to each person. The chairman remarked that although this quantity, ap-

peared large it was not as expensive as would be supposed, as 90 pints of it were malt liquor. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hulke for testing the milk supplied

to the institution. It was decided to accede

to a request of the Education Board that the boundary between the Trustees’ property and the Terrace School grounds be defined. The Trustees then went into

committee, and considered the estimates for the coming year.
