HARBOUR BOARD.

A special meeting of the Harbour Board was held on Tuesday afternoon for the election of chairman for the ensuing year. There were J. Jack, W. Booth, T. J. W. Gale, J.-H. Heaton, J. H. Petherick, F. H, Fraser, C. M. Luke (Mayor), C. W. Brown and Captain Hose. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. . Mr J. Jack, who had held the position of chairman during the past year, returned his hearty thanks for the invariable courtesy and kindness he had received during his; occupancy, of, the chair. He also thanked the officers of the Board for their kindness, and remarked that he was sure his successor would find it a pleasure to occupy the position. , He proposed that Mr Gale be elected to fill the position, and said he was sure that gentleman possessed all the necessary qualifications for that purpose. Mr W. Booth seconded the motion. Mr Gale, he said, was eminently qualified to fill the position of chairman. Mr Heatoil said he had intended to stand for the position, but Mr Pearce was absent, and as it appeared he should be in a minority, he would retire from the contest. The motion was then put to the meeting and carried. Mr Gale, taking his seat as chairman, expressed to the Board his. appreciation of the honour they had conferred upon him and also on the interests he represented on the Board. It wotild be his endeavour to conduct the business as successfully as his worthy predecessor had done, and if he was able to give as much satisfaction as he was sure that gentleman had done, that alone would justify his election.
