?; The usual monthly meeting of the WelEducation Board was held on¥edV nesday. Present —Messrs J. R. Blair (in the chair), W. C.Buchanan, M.H.R., W. W. McCardle, J. Young, P. Bradey, W. A. A request from Pahautanui that the constable be appointed as truant officer was acceded to, and the question of repairs to the roof of the residence was left i in the hands of the carpenter. j The chairman was empowered to deal | with the difficulty that had arisen between the headmaster of the Mangamahoe School . i and the chairman of the committee with | I reference to entries in the log book. .. i The applications of the Newman Com- j mittee for better accommodation, and of j tho Park Vale Committee for repairs to the roller blinds at the teacher's residence and a grant of £lO towards the cost of erecting horse stalls, was declined. The chairman and Mr McCardle were appointed to deal with an application to | take over the Ngaturi school. The question of repairs to the residence and school at Gladstone was left in the I hands of the carpenter. I An application from Waihakeke for a grant of .£5 5s towards procuring a water- j supply was acceded to> and a request from . Kaitara for a artesian water supply was referred to the Chief Inspector. ' An estimate was ordered of the cost of putting in order a site for a'- school at Berhampore. Mr Lee reported a change made in the instruction of pupil teachers which would effect a saving of .£3O a year. He mentioned that from the grant made last year by the Board 60 country school libraries had received assistance. On his recommendation a sum of £lO was voted for the purchase of magic lantern slides for use in the schools, the teachers in many cases having promised to provide the lanterns; With respect to the overcrowding of the Petone School the Chairman reported that he and Inspector Fleming had visited the school, and that he had satisfied himself that the representations of the committee were fully borne out. He concurred ;,Fith the recommendation of the committee tli&t the Board sell the surplus site with the building by auction, and five sections, on one of which there is a, room ■ of no great value. It was expected, .that this property would realise about £300.., He further recommended that an infant school be built on the present school ground, but apart from the main school, with the proceeds of the sale of the land, and that a section at the extreme southern boundary be purchased to give access to the school from that portion of the township. The report was adopted. '( '."."' An application for a grant of £25 from Khandallah for fencing ; was left in the hands of the chairman to report upon at the next meeting. The request of the Terrace Committee for the services of the carpenter for a few days was referred to the chairman. It was decided to carry out the renovation of the inside of Te Aro School during the midwinter holidays. .An application for painting the Clyde quay School and repairing the fences was referred to the chairman.

Mr Fleming (inspector) was directed to visit the Mangapokeo district and report as to a site for a school. Miss Lilian M. Tocker was appointed pupil-teacher at Kaiwaiwai, and Miss Bairstow at Clareville. '. j ■■■•'•'- The Board, in committee, granted,leave of absence to Miss Hewitt, pupil-teacher at Newtown, on account of ill-health ; and on the recommendation of the Westland Education Board agreed to reoeive a pupilteacher from that district as soon as a suitable opening occurred. The chairman was authorised to arrange with Mr Parker for the use of a piano for the singing classes.
