THE OTAKI LICENSE.
From a Correspondent
A large audience, numbering, between three and four hundred people, attended on Saturday night a public meeting called by the Temperance Party, and held at the Town Hall, Levin, in reference to the transfer of a publican's license from Manakau to VVereroa. Several speakers from Wellington and Palmerston North attended to take an active part on behalf of the Temperance cause. Mr James Prouse, of Levin, took the chair, and invited anyone in the body of the hall to make a few remarks. Thi* invitation was accepted by Mr Bartholomew, who strongly objected to the mannerin which the Temperance' cause had connected this transference of a license to Wereroa, with the State farm. Mr Atkinson, who was the final speaker, was completely stonewalled on account of calling 1 the audience " a publican's crowd," and, after considerable delay, was obliged, to resume his seat amid general confusion, the. chairman leaving the chair. The meeting 1 then broke up with three hearty cheers fo? j the State farm and Mr Seddon.
