STRATFORD.
Stratford, February 19. A spell of intensely hot weather is passing over this district. Yesterday at noon the thermometer registered 90 degrees in the shade. This was at an elevation of 1000 feet above sea level. The spell of dry weather has made the fallen timber like tinder, and burns are restarting in all directions. A special train, well patronised, ran from Hawera to New Plymouth on Sunday to carry visitors to the consecration of the new Roman Catholic Church. About 400 passengers availed themselves of the opportunity. A discovery of a large deposit of lignite has been made at the end of the tramway which Mrs Br:>wn, of the Ngaire Sawmills, is extending into the Mangamingi block. The deposit is of considerable and of excellent quality. The Stratford local Board of Health are prepared to take energetic steps in case of any outbreak of typhoid fever in the district. It is now only a matter of a few days when the official notice constituting Stratford a borough will be duly gazetted. The next burning question will be the election of the first Mayor. Already several of the leading townspeople have been quietly sounded on the subject, but in nearly each case the sounded one declined the honour.
